How to Set Up Tax for Your State

Setting up the correct tax rate in JobsPaid ensures your invoices are compliant and accurate for your state. The good news? JobsPaid automatically detects your tax rate based on your business location, but you have full control to adjust it when needed.

Finding Your Tax Settings

  1. Open JobsPaid and tap the Settings tab at the bottom of your screen
  2. Select Business from the settings menu
  3. Scroll down to find the Tax Settings section
  4. Here you'll see your current tax rate that JobsPaid detected for your state

Understanding Auto-Detection

JobsPaid automatically sets your tax rate based on the business address you entered during setup. This includes:

The app displays this rate as a percentage (like 8.25%) in your tax settings.

Overriding the Auto-Detected Rate

Sometimes you may need to adjust the rate manually:

  1. In Tax Settings, tap on the current rate percentage
  2. Enter your preferred tax rate using the number keypad
  3. Tap Save to confirm the change
  4. This new rate will apply to all future invoices and quotes

You might override the rate if you work in multiple tax jurisdictions or have specific licensing requirements for your trade.

Applying Tax to Invoices

Once your rate is set:

  1. Create a new invoice from the Invoices tab
  2. Add your line items as usual
  3. Toggle the Add Tax switch to "on"
  4. JobsPaid automatically calculates and adds the tax amount
  5. Your customer sees the subtotal, tax amount, and total clearly separated

Common Mistakes

Don't forget to check if your trade is tax-exempt in certain situations. Some contractors don't charge tax on labor, only materials.

Remember that tax rates can vary by county or city within your state. Make sure your override rate matches where you're actually working.

Always verify your tax obligations with your accountant or state tax authority, especially when working across state lines.
