An Austin Landscaper Who Finally Separated Business From Personal Money
The Story
Maria F. runs a four-person landscaping crew in Austin. Mowing, edging, mulching, seasonal plantings — she handles about 35 residential accounts. All of them used to pay through her personal Venmo.
"I had one Venmo for everything. Customers paying me, me paying back a friend for dinner, birthday money from my mom. At tax time, my accountant had to go line by line through hundreds of transactions and ask 'is this business or personal?'"
Maria's first year, she missed reporting $4,200 in income because it was buried in personal transactions. The amended return cost her $600 in penalties.
"That was the year I promised myself I'd get a system. It took me two more years to actually do it."
With JobsPaid, every customer payment is logged against a specific invoice. Maria can see exactly what's business income and what isn't.
"At the end of the month, I export my numbers and everything is clean. Business income is business income. My accountant sends me a thank-you text now instead of an angry email."
Maria also started sending proper invoices instead of "just Venmo me.> " Her average payment speed improved because customers took the invoices more seriously.
"When you text someone 'send me $450 on Venmo,' it feels informal. They pay when they feel like it. When you send a real invoice, they pay within a week."
