A Chicago Painter Who Upsold $500/Job With Itemized Quotes
The Story
Tommy N. runs a residential painting crew in Chicago. For years, he quoted flat prices: > "$2,200 for the living room." Clean, simple, and leaving money on the table.
"I never offered upgrades because I didn't want to seem pushy. Premium paint, extra coats, trim work, accent walls — I knew I could do them, but I never brought them up."
When Tommy started using itemized quotes, he had an idea: list the base job and then add optional upgrade line items below.
"I'd send a quote with the base price and then three optional add-ons underneath: premium Sherwin-Williams paint (+$350), accent wall (+$200), trim and baseboards (+$400). I wasn't selling — I was just showing them their options."
The results surprised him. About 60% of customers chose at least one upgrade. About 25% chose two or more.
"The average job went from $2,200 to about $2,700. That's $500 more per job just by listing options I was already capable of doing. I didn't learn a single new skill."
Over a year, Tommy estimates the upselling added roughly $30,000 to his revenue.
"The secret is that people want to upgrade. They just need to see the option. Nobody asks 'do you have premium paint?' But if you put it on the quote, they go 'oh yeah, let's do that.'"
