A Denver Concrete Contractor Who Stopped Losing Deposits
The Story
Ray C. runs a six-person concrete crew in the Denver metro area. Driveways, patios, retaining walls, stamped decorative work — his crew pours about 15 to 20 jobs per month in the busy season. Most of these require a 30% deposit before work begins.
"I was collecting deposits however the customer wanted to pay. Cash, Venmo, Zelle, a check left under the doormat — I didn't care, I just wanted the money so I could order materials."
The problem was record-keeping. Ray kept deposit records in a Notes app on his phone. No receipts, no timestamps, no paper trail.
"Last summer, three different customers claimed they already paid their balance in full because the deposit was included. One guy Venmo'd me $2,800 as a deposit and then six weeks later said that was the total. I had no documentation tying the Venmo payment to a specific quote."
Ray lost over $5,000 in disputed deposits in a single season. When his wife — who handles the books — found out, she made the call.
"My wife set up JobsPaid one evening. She put me on the phone and said 'You are using this starting tomorrow, no discussion.' She was right."
Now every quote Ray sends includes a deposit requirement — the amount calculated automatically from the job total. When a customer pays the deposit, it is logged against that specific quote. No ambiguity, no disputes.
"A customer tried the same thing last month. Said his deposit covered the balance. I pulled up the quote on my phone, showed him the deposit line item, the remaining balance, everything. He paid the rest that afternoon. No argument."
In the six months since switching, Ray has had zero deposit disputes. He estimates the app has saved him at least $8,000 in money he would have lost to he-said-she-said arguments.
"Concrete work is hard enough. I don't need to be fighting with customers over money they agreed to pay. Now I have the receipts — literally."
