An Oklahoma Roofer Who Got Insurance Work Because of His Documentation
The Story
James B. runs a five-person roofing crew in Oklahoma City. After every hail season, homeowners file insurance claims and need roofers. The competition is fierce — storm chasers flood in from out of state.
"Insurance adjusters told me something I never expected: they prefer working with roofers who send detailed, professional invoices. It makes their job easier because they can match line items to the claim."
James used to send one-line invoices: > "Roof replacement — $12,000." Insurance adjusters would send it back asking for a breakdown. He'd lose days going back and forth.
"I rebuilt my invoicing process with detailed line items — materials by type, labor hours, tear-off, dump fees, flashing, ventilation. Every roofing component on its own line."
Within one storm season, three insurance adjusters started referring homeowners directly to James.
"One adjuster told me: 'I send people to you because I know your invoice is going to match my scope. It saves me two hours per claim.' That's the best compliment I've ever gotten in business."
James estimates the insurance referrals added roughly $80,000 in revenue over a single storm season. He hasn't done any marketing since.
"My invoices became my marketing. I never thought documentation could drive revenue, but in insurance work, it absolutely does."
