The Contractor's Guide to Getting 5-Star Reviews
Reviews Are Your New Resume
Forget word of mouth the old way. Today's word of mouth is digital — and it lives on Google, Yelp, and Nextdoor. When a homeowner needs a contractor, the first thing they do is search and sort by rating.
87% of homeowners check online reviews before hiring a contractor. If you have 5 reviews, you're invisible next to the competitor with 85.
When to Ask (Timing Is Everything)
The perfect moment to ask for a review: immediately after the customer expresses satisfaction. Not a week later. Not in a follow-up email they'll ignore. Right there, in the moment.
Customer says: "Wow, this looks amazing!" You say: "Thank you! Would you mind leaving a quick review on Google? It really helps my business. I can text you the direct link right now."
That conversion rate? 60-70%. Wait a week and ask by email? 5-10%.
Make It Ridiculously Easy
Don't say "find me on Google and leave a review." That requires 6 steps and they won't do it.
Instead:
- Go to your Google Business Profile
- Click "Ask for reviews" to get your direct review link
- Save that link in your phone
- Text it to the customer right after the conversation
The link takes them directly to the review form. One click. Done.
"I started texting my Google review link to every customer right after saying goodbye. Went from 8 reviews to 62 in four months." — Rosa M., Tucson AZ
Handling Negative Reviews
Don't panic. Don't get defensive. Don't ignore it.
Respond publicly within 24 hours with this formula:
- Thank them for the feedback
- Apologize for their experience (even if you disagree)
- Offer to make it right offline: "Please call me at [phone] so I can address this directly"
This shows future customers that you care. A professional response to a negative review can actually increase trust — people know nobody is perfect, but they want to see how you handle problems.
Which Platforms Matter Most
- Google Business Profile — #1 priority, shows in search results
- Yelp — still relevant for home services
- Nextdoor — hyperlocal, trusted by homeowners
- Facebook — if you have a business page
- Angi/HomeAdvisor — if you use these platforms
Focus on Google first. Get to 50+ reviews with a 4.7+ rating and you'll dominate local search.
The Compound Effect
Every review makes the next one easier. At 10 reviews, homeowners consider you. At 30, they trust you. At 50+, you're the obvious choice. Each review is a tiny investment that pays dividends for years.
Your next step: Text your Google review link to the last 5 customers you completed work for. At least 2-3 will leave a review this week.
