How to Write a Flooring Quote That Closes
The Square Foot Trap
Homeowners shopping for flooring love to reduce everything to "price per square foot." But your quote isn't just materials — it's demo, prep, transitions, moldings, and expertise.
What Your Flooring Quote Should Include
1. Material Specification Don't write "LVP flooring." Write "Shaw Floorté Pro 7-series LVP, 6.5mm with cork backing, color: Tawny Oak." Specificity prevents scope disputes.
2. Prep Work (Separate Line)
- Subfloor leveling: $X per sq ft over Y tolerance
- Moisture barrier: $X
- Removal of existing flooring: $X per sq ft
- Furniture moving: included or $X
3. Materials with Waste Factor 800 sq ft room + 10% waste = 880 sq ft of material ordered. Show this calculation so the customer understands why you're ordering "extra."
4. Transitions and Trim
- T-moldings between rooms: $X each
- Baseboard removal/reinstall: $X per linear ft
- Stair nosing: $X per step
5. Timeline "Installation: 2 days. Furniture can be replaced 24 hours after completion."
"My flooring quotes used to be one line: 'LVP install 800sf — $4,200.' Now I break it into 8 lines. My average quote went from $4,200 to $5,500 because customers see the value." — Chris L., Kansas City MO
Your next step: Add subfloor prep, transitions, and waste factor as separate lines on your next quote.
