How to Handle Partial Payments

What Are Partial Payments?

Sometimes your customers can't pay the full invoice amount right away. That's completely normal in the trades! Partial payments let you record when a customer pays part of their bill, so you can keep track of what's still owed and maintain good relationships with your clients.

Recording a Partial Payment

  1. Go to your Dashboard and click on Invoices
  2. Find the invoice that received a partial payment
  3. Click on the invoice to open it
  4. Look for the Record Payment button at the top of the invoice
  5. Click Record Payment
  6. Enter the amount your customer actually paid (not the full invoice amount)
  7. Select the payment method (cash, check, credit card, etc.)
  8. Add the date you received the payment
  9. Click Save Payment

The invoice will now show the partial payment amount and calculate your remaining balance automatically.

Tracking What's Still Owed

After recording a partial payment, JobsPaid makes it easy to see what's left:

Sending Balance Reminders

When you're ready to collect the remaining balance:

  1. Open the partially paid invoice
  2. Click Send Reminder
  3. The reminder email will automatically show only the remaining balance
  4. Your customer will see exactly what they still owe

Multiple Partial Payments

If your customer makes several partial payments, just repeat the recording process each time. JobsPaid keeps track of all payments and automatically updates the balance after each one.

Common Mistakes

Don't create a new invoice for the remaining balance - just keep using the original invoice and record each payment as it comes in.

Make sure to enter the actual amount received, not the total invoice amount. The app does the math for you.

Remember to check your state's requirements about payment terms and late fees before setting up your invoices.
